Part I: Discipline
Disciplined Freedom
3 Ways to Maintain Freedom for the Conscious Go Getter
“Through Discipline Comes FREEDOM” – Aristotle
We all want to be free. The hippy bohemian that fuels our creativity would love to live a life free of obligation and responsibility. However that is the wrong perspective to have of discipline. In fact discipline is what sets us free.
So why is it that discipline sets us free? It allows us to have the following components of freedom:
- Success
- Financial Freedom
- Abundant Choices
- Increased Self-Confidence
- Increased Productivity
- More free time
- Good habits
- True Mastery in a specific area
- Alignment with your goals
- Purpose
Here are some specific ways for a conscious go getter to create disciplined freedom.
Discipline: Stick to your schedule
Freedom: Gain more free time
If you are a go getter, you probably have a full calendar, filled with not only events but tasks that you have scheduled for yourself to complete. Stick to these goals, learn how to develop new habits, if need be, to be able to meet deadlines. Procrastination can extend the length of completing something by up to five times. Furthermore when we finish a task after waiting until the last minute, the stress doesn’t allow us to feel that rewarding accomplishment feeling that we usually get when we scratch something off of our todo list. That proud feeling that we get when we finish tasks without stress creates increased self-esteem that propels us to be even more productive. As a result of this increased productivity we can create more free time for ourselves and enjoy our free time more peacefully.
Realize that there will always be something to pull you away from what you need to be doing. Life happens, but we must prioritize and be able to stick to a plan without allowing ourselves to be constantly distracted. A great technique to learn how to become less distracted is the fifth limb of yoga Pratyahara. Read more about yoga meditation here.
Discipline: Give your all to whatever you are doing
Freedom: Self-Fulfillment
Find meaning in what you are doing and give your all when you are engaged in your hustle life. Find some way to make your work interesting and meaningful to you. This is freedom: taking action on something that fulfills you and leaves you feeling satisfied. This will allow you glide through hustling feeling free as a bird and energized to make the most of your work time.
Discipline: Mastery of Self
Freedom: Get Out of Your Own Way
Find a way to gain autonomy in your work. If you work in a restrictive environment, maybe you can take on a special project that you can lead. Or if you are student, own your autonomy to develop a study plan and design it in a way that appeals to you. When we can work in the ways that work best for us and begin to discipline ourselves, we gain freedom from needing another to hold us accountable. There is tremendous freedom in learning to discipline your work ethic, focus, and follow through for yourself.
Beyond disciplining yourself for work tasks, it is also helpful to learn to discipline your mind, desires, and emotions. Gaining control of yourself allows you to walk through life in a flow state, without getting in the way of yourself as you propel towards success. So process your emotions and find ways to learn how control your thoughts and reactions. A great tool for learning to gain control over your mind is meditation. Discipline: Keeping a Larger Perspective
Freedom: You don’t mind the Grind
Revisit your relationship with hustling. Are you looking at your work as an obligation or an opportunity? The tasks that you complete as you grind towards your goals aren’t things you are obligated to do. You chose to do those things. To put in work to reach success. In fact you likely started them because you wanted reach a certain goal. Keep this in mind when you are hustling and begin to resent having to grind. As Brendon Burchard says, “Honor the struggle” There is freedom in taking the steps to fulfill your purpose. Only you can take those steps and only you can set yourself free by fulfilling your purpose. Hustle hard Queen (or King)., you’ll rest when you di… dive into the pool on your vacation in Dubai.
Discipline: Maintaining Balance
Freedom: Well Rounded Life and Happiness
Schedule Freedom Time. Make sure you are having fun. Schedule things that bring you joy and be disciplined about doing them regularly no matter what. One great thing to do to increase your sense of freedom in everyday life is to be sure to get out in nature at least once a week. If you are in California and can visit the beach or go hiking in the mountains that’s perfect. If you live in a major city, go to the park and take time to be outdoors. Not only will reconnecting with Mother Earth help you to feel more free, it is also correlated with better mental and emotional health.
You may also find it helpful to schedule a block of time to whatever it is you want in that time frame. This allows us to still experience the joy of being spontaneous and not always being on a calendar. This is a way to trick our brains and fulfill the urge to be spontaneous.
